If you’re looking at car lease deals on a true workhorse, it’s worth doing your homework on what’s out there in terms of pick-ups. It used to be the case that comfort was very much second best to practicality with pick-ups: they were designed to get you and your load from A to B without paying too much attention to what was going on in the cabin. As the 2014 Nissan Navara demonstrates, things have now moved on.
It’s big; it’s tough and it’s built to last: three things that you’d expect from a premium vehicle in this class. But what if you also need a certain degree of passenger comfort? Thankfully, Nissan has this in hand. There are three areas where this car excels: an all-round solid build, supreme practicality and a comfortable ride. We take a closer look…
All-round solid build and performance
If you’ve been tempted by car leasing deals in the SUV class, you may have cast your eye over the Nissan Pathfinder – which was actually built in the same factory as the Navara. In fact, both vehicles share the same chassis, which is most definitely built for strength. The Navara has been around since 2005 and you’re in safe hands so far as reputation goes – given that the Navara has established itself as the biggest selling pick-up in Europe. A bit of a spruce-up has taken place to ensure that the Navara remains ahead of the game.
The rugged solidity of the original version hasn’t been messed around with too much. The most obvious changes to the exterior of the 2014 Nissan Navara are to the bumper: the facelift includes a new bonnet and grille complete with a curvier appearance to give the car a slightly more streamlined effect. These changes to the front end have the effect of lengthening the nose by a full 8 cm.
Weighing in at just over two tonnes, the 2014 Nissan Navara needs a reliable powerplant to get it going. This is supplied with the choice of either a 2.5-litre four cylinder or a 3-litre V6 engine – both of which are diesels. If you’re looking for car lease deals on something that will handle off-road terrain as well as getting your loads from A to B, you should be pleased with what’s on offer with the Nissan Navara. A seven-speed gearbox offers a smooth shifting experience – even when it’s got its work cut out on steep gradients. There’s also a low-range transfer box to give you extra off-road capability and handling when you’re off the track. As you would expect, performance under pressure is particularly in evidence with the 3.0-litre variant.
Supreme Practicality
The 2014 Nissan Navara might be a lot more than a basic utility vehicle – but of course, it still has to prove its mettle in the utility stakes for it to be considered worthy as a pick-up. People look at car leasing deals on pick-ups for lots of different purposes – both business and pleasure – but one thing all those motorists have in common is the expectation of being able to cart large quantities of ‘stuff’. The Nissan Navara certainly doesn’t disappoint on that score as it’s capable of carrying a load of 1,090kg. As if that wasn’t enough, if you really want to, you can also tow a 3000kg trailer if you opt for the 3-litre V6. That all-important rear load bay is 1,560 mm wide and 1,511 mm long: so even the most awkward of loads should be safely accommodated. There’s also the option of a hard top if you’re likely to be carrying the type of load that needs protection from the elements.
A comfortable ride
The 2014 Nissan Navara boasts plenty of legroom. The Tekna trim level represents particularly good value for money as it undercuts its competitor the VW Amarok to the same spec level by quite some margin. With the Tekna you get leather seats, electric heated front seats, headlight washers and electric sunroof all as standard. Upgrade to the premium package and you also get a reversing camera, sat nav and a Bose stereo.
The final word
The double-cab can seat five in comfort. What’s more, unless you’re dealing with huge commercial loads, the Nissan Navara can handle pretty much anything. Would you ever switch from an estate or SUV to a big, bold pick-up? Let us know what you think of the Navara.
