2014 Range Rover Review

The mighty Range Rover has always been more of a leader than a follower, and the 2014 Range Rover is certainly no different. It’s an absolute beast of a super-luxury SUV that is – somehow – lighter than the 2013 Range Rover – but decidedly larger. That, of course, is no bad thing and will no doubt be music to Range Rover aficionados. Even better, it looks smarter than before, with the 2014 Range Rover sporting a very contemporary look, and it’s also benefiting from more high-tech investment. Amazingly, it’s also better off-road too.

So, can it do anything wrong? Well, Land Rover certainly have the midas touch when it comes to the popular Range Rover 2014. It’s now more green-minded, comes with mainstream six-cylinder versions, an aluminium body, and has been described as a ‘Rolls Royce in the rough.’ Let’s take a closer look at this timelessly wondrous behemoth.

Less Weight But Still Enough Meat

The 2014 Range Rover manages to be lighter than the 2013 Range Rover, largely because the meaty V8 engine has been replaced by the six cylinder TDV6 that you’ll find in the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover hybrid. This bonus was managed because of the inclusion of elegant aluminium underpinnings. For this reason, the 258PS variant is capable of reaching 60mph from rest in 7.4 seconds. These figures are also enhanced by the fact that the 258PS unit makes use of a single turbocharging system, as opposed to the previous twin turbocharging technology. If you quite enjoyed the twin turbocharging technology, you can still find this layout on the 306PS SDV6 model.

Still, the muscular, beefier unit lies with the 4.4-litre SDV8 diesel variant, which has 340PS and 700Nm of torque. You will be hard pressed to find a more powerful diesel engine in modern automobile production. It is capable of reaching a top speed of 135mph, can clear 60mph in just 6.5 seconds. For even more mettle, there is the petrol variant, the supercharged 5.0-litre 510PS, which can reach 60mph from rest in 5.1 seconds, truly battening down the (private road) hatches. And for those interested in the 2014 Range Rover’s off-road abilities (as if there is anyone who wouldn’t be interested), the Intelligent 4WD system, as well as the All-Terrain Progress Control, reduces your workload on inhospitable terrain, keeping the car steady and safe.

As Ever, A Range Rover

As mentioned, the 2014 Range Rover looks smarter than before, but don’t let that fool you – this looks exactly as a Range Rover should look, as recognisably a Range Rover as ever. Indeed, there are probably only a handful of modern cars the world over that those with absolutely no interest in cars would be able to recognise, and the 2014 Range Rover is very firmly one of them. A five-door, five-seater luxury SUV with superb off-road ability, it does what it has always said on the tin. It does, however, benefit from a few much-needed changes.

There is the aluminium technology, which reportedly cost the company £1 billion, which makes the 2014 Range Rover the first luxury SUV in the world to come with an all-aluminium body structure which makes a huge – lighter – difference to its overall weight. It’s less bulky than before – 420kgs lighter – and this has real impact on both its smarter looks and its drivability.

The improved 2013 Range Rover dimensions means there is also now more space in the rear, with the LWB variant able to offer you 200mm extra space than before. The boot is actually slightly smaller than the 2013 Range Rover, with total space now measuring up to around 810.

Range Rover Deals

Range Rover prices start at £75,000, with the Range Rover offers rising to around £100,000. The 5.0-litre V8 supercharged Range Rover is among the costliest, and at £100,000, Range Rover Sports fans – who expect to pay £40,000 for their models of choice – might well be raising a few eyebrows, but both sets of cars appeal to different consumers for different reasons, and they offer different things.

The 3.0-litre and 4.4-litre diesels will invariably be the most popular choices here, with the 4.4-litre variant requiring a premium of around £7,000 to make the step-up. For green-minded buyers, the V6 engines offered here are not only lighter than the V8’s, but they also perform just as well and return better running costs – 20% better.

All in all, the 2014 Range Rover is, to put it simply, a Range Rover. It looks like one, drives like one, runs like one. The simple catch is that it’s better than before.
