With its original release in 2009, this is an updated model that is a substantial improvement on that standards set down before. Impressive styling, strong value and a variety of new engines meld with the standard 5 door Megane’s virtues to present a tempting affordable Sports Coupe package. The new Renault Megane Coupe is definitely one to consider. The modern era Renault Megane Coupe heralded a new, bolder shift in Renault style when it was introduced as a concept back in 2008. It’s certainly distinctive with a more aggressive nose to set it apart from regular forms of Megane. The facelift includes chrome air scoops in the bumper and a black gloss trim to the big central air intake grille. The new Renault Megane Coupe design staples meld easily with the sleek, curvaceous bodywork through to the pumped up sculpted Coupe rear. It’s important to note that due to the nature of its design, the rear view is somewhat restricted so it would be wise to spec it with rear parking sensors.
Inside the new Renault Megane Coupe, it’s pretty thrill-less and conventional in cheaper variants, but as you ascend the range it becomes a lot more special with sporty features such as sports seats, metal peddles, analogue instrument dials and a nice red dash trim line; which all enhance that sports car feeling. The build quality is very good all round and there is a class leading amount of steering wheel mount and chair adjustability to ensure you’re perfectly placed and comfortable. Practicality is good with handy foot well underfloor compartments to keep items out of sight and big door bins to cater for your storage needs.
Coupes have never been famed for their rear seat comfort and the new Renault Megane Coupe is no exception to this tradition. The high window lines are a little claustrophobic and the legroom is somewhat limited. Despite this it should be decent enough for a couple of people over a short distance. The 344ltr boot is a very decent size for this kind of vehicle and nicely shaped too, extending further should you need it by dropping the rear seats down.
Despite the race car-like Renault sport models at the top of the range, most of the new Renault Megane Coupe models are primarily aimed at buyers looking for an affordable sporty car that can be applied on a more everyday basis. The Megane Coupe is actually very smooth riding and nicely absorbent across most road surfaces with a low, if firm ride. One could argue that a cushy ride isn’t on the priorities list in a car of this kind so some might find this an annoying aspect, but it makes up for this through sportiness elsewhere so there will no doubt be people who enjoy the everyday use balance it gives. In general there is a lot less body roll than with the 5 door hatch on account of the lowered ride height. With the GT line model you’ll enhance these qualities greatly with the inclusion of a low centred sports chassis with stiffer suspension which allows you to take on the bend at speed really well. It also lets you enjoy the Megane Coupe’s great grip and slick gearbox for a more enjoyable drive. You can take this a step further still if you want to splash out on one of the top line Renaultsport models which feature a Renaultsport chassis setup to match the higher stats. So basically, the chassis and associated ride dynamics have been improved and they improve further the higher you go up the range. This handling development is important as one the Megane Coupe’s primary competitive selling points.
Another selling point is the addition of 3 nicely efficient start/stop engines which give a great balance of performance and efficiency. Highlights include the 1.2ltr TCe petrol which replaces the older 1.6ltr unit, giving it a lot more torque than before thanks to new direct injection and turbo power – a first for an economically viable engine. The new Renault Megane Coupe can hit 62mph from standing in 10.9 seconds up to a top speed of 118mph. If pulling power is something you value highly then you’ll be going diesel. There’s the DCi 110 – Renault’s bestselling engine worldwide (62 in 12 seconds up to 118mph again). There are 2 more – the 2.0ltr DCi 160, which is best avoided in light of the DCi 130 which is up to 50% more efficient and reaches 62 in 10 seconds and topping out at 124mph. At the top of the range we have the likes of the Renaultsport 250 which is great for track days with a 250bhp turbocharged 2.0ltr that gets to 62mph in 6.1 seconds up to a top speed of 156mph.
All new Renault Megane Coupe models are great for economy. Thanks to light weight, engine efficiency and aerodynamic body styling, the Megane Coupe can be classed as ‘Eco 2’- that means it pumps out under 120g/pk of CO2, 5% of the plastics are recycled and it has 95% recoverability at the end of its life. The diesels can deliver as little as 90g/pk and 80mpg. All in all, what’s the lowdown with the new Renault Megane Coupe? This improved Coupe presents a lot of appeal if you want a good looking Sports Coupe that is efficient and very good value for its pricing. Upon this there a great range of engines to choose from, including some top end Renaultsport variants for the wannabe petrol heads out there. The new Renault Megane Coupe probably isn’t the first thing you’d think of in this segment, but it’s a sporty car that ticks the boxes and will definitely hold its own under ownership. It’s definitely worth a look.
