An Intriguing Proposition: 2015 Peugeot 508 RXH Review

The 2015 Peugeot 508 RXH is kind of a big deal for the RXH, and for Peugeot at large. Sales haven’t gone too well since the original Peugeot 508 RXH was first launched back in 2012. Despite offering 4WD, and despite it being an extra addition to their arsenal of diesel/electric hybrid cars, the Peugeot 508 RXH didn’t go down too well with consumers. But the Peugeot 508 RXH 2015 is certainly an interesting – and affordable – Peugeot 508 estate. Let’s take a closer look at what the Peugeot 508 RXH offers with our Peugeot 508 review.

2015 Peugeot 508 RXH

Like most hybrids, the Peugeot 508 hybrid comes with an automatic gearbox only, though it does also offer a set of gearshift paddles. But the real talking point here is what power the diesel engine – which drives the front wheels – and the 36bhp AC electric motor – which takes care of the rear – give you. Well, a combined power of 200hp and 450Nm of torque for starters. This makes for a towing capacity of 1,100 kg, whetting the anticipation for a fast ride.

But here’s the bad news: the battery and such for the Peugeot 508 hybrid weighs 200kg. Not exactly light as a feather. It basically adds up to the same weight as a few extra passengers crammed into the 2015 Peugeot 508 RXH. For the Peugeot 508 RXH 2015, the French brand have added the option of a 2.0-litre BlueHDi engine, which has less bhp than the hybrid but can go just as fast, owing largely to the 2015 Peugeot 508 RXH Hybrid’s extra weight.

Whether you know it or not, it’s worth pointing out that the 2015 Peugeot 508 RXH is one of the most expensive cars the French brand have ever built. Despite this, the shape and look isn’t entirely dissimilar to the Peugeot 508 Estate, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t look good – it does. The diesel engine can be found at the front, with the electric motor replacing the rear axle at the back. The communication between the pair is wholly electronic and works like a dream, with power switching back and forth when needed.

Peugeot have also sorted out a niggling issue with the previous 2012 Peugeot 508 RXH – that of boot space. More specifically, of the electric motor eating into the boot space. True, the diesel-powered Peugeot 508 RXH 2015 offers more boot space than the Peugeot 508 Hybrid, but you still get 423-litres in the latter, as well as 11-litres of extra space underneath the boot.

Final Thoughts

2015 Peugeot 508 RXH deals start at around £30,000 for the conventional diesel, and rise to £35,000 for the Peugeot 508 Hybrid. The lower priced diesel was perhaps added to target and satisfy consumers put off by the extra £5,000 needed for the Peugeot 508 Hybrid, and to thus raise the profile of the Peugeot 508 RXH. Used Peugeot 508 RXH will invariably be a little cheaper. Other models in the range include the Peugeot 508 Allure.

Standard specs for the hybrid include alloy wheels, electrically folding mirrors, cruise control, auto headlamps and wipers, panoramic glass roof, as well as hull start assist and parking sensors. The Peugeot 508 Hybrid produces emissions of 104g/km, whilst fuel economy is 68.9mpg. The conventional diesel Peugeot 508 RXH 2015 variant offers 119g/km.

The 2015 Peugeot 508 RXH will probably receive a bit more attention thanks to its more affordable conventional diesel offering. If you arrived at this review of the Peugeot 508 RXH 2015 after hearing about the inclusion of the 2.0-litre BlueHDi engine, it might be worth seriously considering parting with a little more cash for the very clever – and fairly cheap to run – Peugeot 508 Hybrid. It might cost more outright, but saves more in the long run. A 4WD that is eco-friendly? Yeah, why not!
