The Maserati Quattroporte is the sixth generation version and so far it’s already selling well, with the Italian brand confident that it will achieve 50,000 sales by the end of this year. It’s a V8-powered luxury performance car that looks stylish and elegant as heck, but which also comes with a fairly good degree of practicality. Let’s take a closer look at what it offers.
Electrifying
In some ways, you could term the Maserati Quattroporte a large limousine, and if you do, you’d probably not expect much in terms of acceleration. Yet the V8 unit can get to 62mph from rest in just 4.7 seconds, and although the V6 variant on offer lacks this kind of pace and electrifying speed, it’s also another worthy option that feels fast enough. It’s just that the V8 is such a monster – also sounds like one too – that if anyone is looking to buy the Maserati Quattroporte for pure pace alone, going for the V8 is something of a no brainer.
Aside from speed, the Maserati Quattroporte finds life on straight roads fine but hits a few problems when confronting twistier lanes and corners. It’s decent, don’t get us wrong, but doesn’t stand up when compared to its competitors. The steering is a bit unresponsive at times and not quite as accurate as you’d like, leading to a lack of confidence when you see a corner approaching. Owing to this, composure can be an issue. The Skyhook dampers though, have at least improved suspension, and if you switch to Sport mode, you’ll be able to stiffen the suspension even more.
X-Factor
One thing that a Maserati always has been – and always really should be – is gorgeous. Worryingly, the Maserati Quattroporte has divided opinion, with a few critics sniping that the brand should have let designer Pininfarina continue the excellent job he had done with this cars predecessor. Instead, Maserati decided to conjure up their Maserati Quattroporte in-house, and whether this is responsible for the divided opinion or not, it is largely agreed upon that the Maserati Quattroporte is not the fairest in the land.
That isn’t to say it’s ugly – this car sure is stylish and elegant, it’s just that it lacks something. You know, something that makes it a Maserati, that defines it, helps it stand out from the crowd. One of the usual cues is the three fake air vents attached to the front wings, whilst the low snout helps to give it an edge. But the overall impression is that it looks a little bloated. Still, inside the X-Factor is in evidence. The layout is classy, with chrome-ringed dials adding a smart touch, whilst the multifunction wheel is of real quality. Moreover this is a big car, and there is lots of head and legroom on offer, whilst the boot now comes with 80-litres more space than last time around, making it a total of 530.
Facts and Figures
The Maserati Quattroporte price range starts out from around £69,000 and rise to about £110,000. You’ll be able to get hold of a used Maserati Quattroporte or a second hand Maserati Quattroporte for a little less. Options in the range include the Maserati Quattroporte GTS and the Maserati Quattroporte S. Standard equipment across the range includes ambient cabin lighting, eight-way adjustable electric seats and adaptive cruise control, whilst options include powered rear sun blinds (£2,100) and privacy glass (£1,128). Heated rear seats can be added for just £348, though, whilst running costs for the V8 power plant have improved since last time, the miserly 15.7mpg figure was little short of pathetic. This time around it manages to return 23.7mpg whilst emitting 278g/km of CO2.
Final Thoughts
Okay, the new Maserati Quattroporte is not really a limousine, but it does offer limo-sized space. The problem for some buyers might be the fact that it contrasts this spaciousness and practicality with a sporty zest, whilst the noisy diesel engine will be a little too troublesome for some. But still, what the Maserati Quattroporte undoubtedly offers is a strong performance, oodles of space, and a good amount of standard equipment. With the brand expecting sales to rocket this year, the question is whether you’re on-board or not.
