New Renault Megane Coupe Review

The new Renault Megane Coupe represents an interesting proposition in the once again booming affordable sports coupe market. It can be as sporty as you like, or – thanks to a driving mode system – it can simply just look sporty. It’s also affordable, and offers fine build quality, efficiency and comfort. So let’s take a closer look at what the 2015 Renault Megane Coupe offers.

Better Than All The Rest

There was something of boom in the affordable coupe market a few years ago, with mostly all the mainstream manufacturers getting involved. For one reason or another, mostly each one either pulled out or certainly decreased their interest, and yet once more the market is swinging the other way again, with brands like Vauxhall, MINI and Hyundai dipping their toes in the affordable coupe sector once more. Renault were one of the few who didn’t pull out or minimise their interest, with their Renault Megane Coupe 2010 being particularly impressive, and the result is that they’ve been able to hone and perfect their 2015 Renault Megane Coupe so that it’s impressively better than the rest.

New engines in the new Renault Megane Coupe range include a 115PS 1.2 TCe, an engine that seeks to massively improve efficiency, and indeed it produces far better results than its predecessor, the 1.6-litre 16v petrol unit – although this engine does still exist here. The 1.2 TCe can get to 62mph from rest in 10.9 seconds en route to a max speed of 118mph. There is also a 130PS variant that you can get your hands on. The most popular engines, though, will be the diesels because this car really needs diesel pulling power if it’s going to perform optimally. The brand’s bestselling 1.5-litre Energy dCi 110 variant is among those available.

Visually Arresting

When the design of the new Renault Megane Coupe was originally dreamt up back in 2008, it marked a shift in the brand’s aesthetics, with Renault veering towards a more extrovert styling in order to minimise the Renault Megane Coupe problems – the looks. They haven’t looked back since, and the new Renault Megane Coupe continues the thread with a look that is visually arresting, striking and almost stunning – just not quite. Don’t get us wrong, it looks stunning from a few angles, but for some reason it just doesn’t quite work from every angle. Still, there is no doubt that it’s an extroverted car that has benefited from some seriously smart design work.

Inside, proceedings are a little less extrovert. If you opt for the base-level trim, you’ll quickly sober up once you step inside because it just doesn’t match up to the anticipation the exterior created. Sure, the sportier GT trim is exciting, and comes adorned with red trim highlights, sports seats and aluminium pedals, but you really do get what you pay for here. The good thing is that all models have a respectable amount of space, whilst the boot space is the result of a noble effort from the designers, as it offers up 344-litres. Just try to ignore its odd shape.

Facts and Figures

The new Renault Megane Coupe price range starts out from around £17,500 and rises to about £27,000, whilst a used Renault Megane Coupe will be a little cheaper. You won’t be able to get hold of the top-selling 1.5-litre dCi 110 diesel engine unless you pay at least £19,000. Moreover, the base-level new Renault Megane Coupe model doesn’t come with the energy saving stop/start system which is definitely an irk. Still, standard equipment is very good across the range, and includes alloys, daytime running lights, power windows, front fog lights, a trip computer, air conditioning and much more. And because the new Renault Megane Coupe is so lightweight, running costs and emissions are good, with the stunning 1.5-litre dCi diesel returning 80.7mpg whilst emitting just 90g/km of CO2. Incredible.

Final Thoughts

The affordable sports coupe market is pretty much booming again, and the ace up Renault’s sleeve is that, whilst other mainstream manufacturers had temporarily vacated this sector, they hung around, refining their Renault Megane Coupe to get it absolutely tip top. The awesome 2015 Renault Megane Coupe is the result. Less trendy than some, it’s one of the better sports coupes overall, with a fine array of equipment levels, stunning running costs, a fantastic engine line-up to choose from, as well as some seriously good build quality. You might not want to admit it, but this is probably the sports coupe you’ve always needed.
