The history of Volvo
The name Volvo was trademarked in 1911 by the Swedish ball-bearing company SKF. However, the name was left unused for another 13 years. In 1924 two managers from the company decided to start construction of a car that could cope with the rugged roads and harsher climate experienced in Sweden.
In 1927, Volvo produced their first car, the ÖV 4, though only 280 units were actually manufactured.
Volvo cars started to arrive in the US in the early 1950s after the introduction of their first small passenger car. The car was popular and sold well and necessitated expansion, which led to the company building their first manufacturing plant outside Sweden in 1963.
In 1999, Volvo became a part of the Ford Motor Company when it was sold for over $6billion and the company was restructured, focusing on upmarket models to compete with the lower-end luxury models like the BMW saloon.
Just 11 years after Ford took over the reins at Volvo, the company was sold again, this time to the Chinese Zhejiang Geely Holding Group at a cost of $1.8billion. The purchase of Volvo marked the largest purchase of an overseas car manufacturer by a Chinese company.
Following the purchase by Geely, Volvo has refocused their efforts on their product line-up after several years of being hit with necessary recalls due to faults and a number of reliability issues.
